The Communication Resource is a specialist provision within a mainstream school setting which caters for ten children with complex communication needs. All of the children placed with us have Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs- formerly known as Statements) and have access to a specially tailored environment and curriculum to meet their individual needs. Our aim is to develop children’s academic and social skills to enable them to be successfully included in mainstream school.
Inclusion in mainstream school varies and is dependent on the needs of each child. The inclusion of the Resource children in mainstream is always discussed and agreed with the respective class teachers. Inclusion activities may include:
Full time inclusion in with their classes with support from one of our Specialist Learning Support Assistants
Accessing individual lessons. This may be their strongest subject, one they are specifically interested in or one which helps them develop social and/or physical skills e.g. maths or PE
Accessing playtimes and lunchtimes with mainstream peers
Accessing whole school assemblies
Doing jobs in school e.g. litter-picking
Accessing class trips
Reverse Inclusion Activities or Groups
A Day in Our Resource:
The Resource school day is shorter than in mainstream school. The school day starts at 9.15am and finishes at 3.00pm. The Resource day is carefully structured to support the needs of the children. All children complete daily Literacy and Numeracy lessons in addition to science, topic, art and computing. Alongside incidental opportunities, such as play and snack times, afternoon lessons focus on meeting children’s sensory needs and developing their social skills.
Children’s lessons are broken into smaller chunks and children can earn ‘choose’ time throughout the day for completing set tasks and demonstrating appropriate behaviours. Positive social interactions with others are continually encouraged throughout the school day.
Visual support systems are consistently used throughout the Resource to promote children’s independence and concrete understanding of the structure of the school day. Children in the Resource have access to our Green Room- our newly developed sensory space. Additionally, they have their own independent workstations. We also use a very clear behaviour strategy to support our learners and they are positively encouraged to use these or our Chill Out rooms when they are feeling anxious, angry or upset or just need some time out.
The Resource has a Teacher in Charge, who is responsible for the overall running of the Resource. This includes teaching and learning, safeguarding and ensuring children’s special educational needs are met appropriately.
There are two Specialist Learning Support Officers who support the Teacher in Charge in the daily operation of the Resource and five Specialist Learning Support Assistants who support children’s learning both in the Resource and in mainstream classes. We are also lucky to have a midday supervisor who offers additional support to the children over the lunchtime breaks.
